Who we are
The Institute for Software Systems in Technical Applications of Computer Science (FORWISS) was founded in 2005. FORWISS provides a link between academia and industry. We develop and apply the latest technologies for small and mid-size companies as well as for large enterprises, research corporations and national projects.
We provide expertise in image and signal processing, optical measurement algorithms, 3D-printing applications as well as in driver assistance systems, especially for environmental perception. The wide range of our projects empowers us to provide a real- world solution to client-specific problems based on fundamental and cutting-edge research in cooperation with industry partners.
The group has successfully completed a large number of projects on local, national and European level. We cooperate with a wide range of major players for applications in qualtiy control, automation, sensor data processing and automotive.

In 1988, FORWISS was founded as the first Bavarian research cluster consisting of groups at the three universities Technical Univerity of Munich, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Universität Passau with decreasing funding for three years. Six individual research groups with different interests were established.
The research group in Passau continued its research projects and industry cooperations during the years 2002-2004 without funding by the government.
In 2005, the group in Passau was transformed into the Institute for Software Systems in Technical Applications of Computer Science. The group is activing independently of the former cluster and is the only institute to still carry the name FORWISS.
Over the recent years, the group has developed strong partnerships with industry and grown its reputation as valuable partner in research and development.
